Advanced Anatomy & Physiology
The emphasis will be on greater detail of anatomical structures and their functions. In Physiology the emphasis is on the areas of digestion and absorption, heart and cardiovascular, blood, blood pressure control, muscle, nerve tissue, excitable tissue, endocrine system, and homeostasis in further detail. Review functional movement and basic exercise programme appropriate for rehabilitation. This is the underpinning knowledge required for the application of Remedial Massage Techniques.


Clinical Assessment
Explore the fundamental philosophy underpinning the aspects of the medical examination relevant to the musculoskeletal system. Give the students the practical skills necessary to conduct a competent examination of the musculoskeletal system. Revise the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. Key points covered are:

  • How to take a Medical History
  • Terminology of primary skin lesions
  • Examination of the skin
  • Examination of the motor systems and reflexes
  • Examination of the sensory system
  • Diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions
  • Examination of joints and How to read a plain Xray.

Clinical Management & Referral
  • Develop Professional Expertise
  • The basis for research in Massage and development of professional skills
  • Make referrals to other Health Professionals
  • How to respond to referral and writing a technical report
  • Workcover requirements.

Pathophysiology
This subject will aim to introduce the student to:
  • The most important clinical manifestation - pain
  • Mechanisms, control and types of pain will be explored
  • The common types of headache, emphasis will be placed on head pain indicative to serious pathology
  • The common causes of back pain; emphasis on indicative serious pathology
  • Rheumatologic conditions

Remedial Massage
This course will provide sound understanding of the disorders Remedial Therapists will be treating. Treatment of presenting musculoskeletal complaints. Advanced study and application of Muscle Energy Technique (MET) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF). Further study and application of Trigger Point Therapy including upper and lower torso. The application of Cupping using the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach and Western Medicine approach.

Student Clinic Practice
Time to put into practice everything you have studied. At the college student clinic you will see a broad cross section of the community and treat each client individually putting together an appropriate treatment plan whilst under the guidance of the clinic supervisor. This will instil in you the confidence to handle most situations when you are ready to start on your own.
